Hyperion Correction

Two Hyperion images of the Greenland ice sheet are used to characterize errors in the VNIR and SWIR detector arrays of Hyperion. Spatial variability in detector output is seen in both arrays and, in both cases, is largest at the shorter wavelengths and decreases as wavelength increases. Standard deviations of the maximum variability are 40 DN for the VNIR array and 123 DN for the SWIR array. Te...

Solving the mystery of Iapetus

Since the discovery of Iapetus by G. D. Cassini, in 1672, it has been known that the leading hemisphere of this Saturnian satellite is one order of magnitude darker than the trailing hemisphere. Since the Cassini spacecraft entered the Saturnian orbit, several high-quality images of the dark hemisphere of Iapetus have been obtained, in particular during the Dec 31 2004 flyby of this satellite. ...

The Chaotic Rotation of Hyperion

A plot of spin rate versus orientation when Hyperion is at the pericenter of its orbit (surface of section) reveals a large chaotic zone surrounding the synchronous spin-orbit state of Hyperion, if the satellite is assumed to be rotating about a principal axis which is normal to its orbit plane. This means that Hyperion's rotation in this zone exhibits large, essentially random variations on a ...

Al DECAY: HEAT PRODUCTION AND A REVISED AGE FOR IAPETUS

Introduction: We revisit the decay energies that have been used for computing the heat produced by the decay of Al in geophysical models. Its decay scheme is complex and the values that have been used have a range of about a factor of three (Table 1). This is a major issue because Al is a primary heat source for planetary objects formed in the early solar system. Based on Schramm et al., [1] an...
